Shark

Description

This is my interpretation of a weathervane produced by Tuck and Holland Metal Sculptors based in Martha’s Vineyard, USA; the design came from a sketch by Joe Alves – production designer on the 1975 film, Jaws. The finished weathervane sits atop Quint’s shack – the sculpture is barely visible in the film but I sourced the image of the original to inspire my piece.

The original used in the film was formed of panel beaten copper and gilded using gold leaf. My interpretation of this design was sculpted in an oil based clay (see pictures)  Particular attention was spent on emulating the rustic welds and hammer marks found in this style of metal sculpture.  The finished clay was then moulded using silicone rubber in order to produce a selection of metal resin finishes. The rusted iron look pictured lends itself to the idea of a resurrected artefact plundered from the rotting hull of a sunken ship. A rusting fish out of water!

The process of oxidisation used in all my iron resin sculptures is naturally occurring and the rusting is unique to each piece that is cast. This means that the finish in each addition may vary. The rusting process can be sealed using a lacquer in order to halt the continual oxidisation.

This sculpture is suitable for both indoor and outdoor display.

Two variations of this sculpture are available at this scale:

1: The pictured image shows the Shark seated on a post fixed to an oak plinth. Dimensions: 86cm x 55cm x 38cm

2: This version is displayed attached to a weathervane (weathervane is for display only).

The Shark is available as a limited edition of 6

in 4 different metal resin finishes:

Bronze, Rusted Iron, Pewter and Gold Leaf.
